# Sending your first SMS from a contact record

## Have a real two way SMS conversation without leaving HubSpot

## Where to send from

Open any contact record in HubSpot. In the right-hand sidebar, you'll find the **SMS Chat** card.

## Sending a message

1. Type your message in the text box
2. Choose a sender number if you have dedicated numbers configured -- otherwise your shared number is used automatically
3. Click **Send**

Your message is sent immediately, and a record of the send -- including cost and message parts -- is logged to the contact's HubSpot timeline and visible in the chat history.

## Receiving replies

When a contact replies, their message appears in the same SMS Chat card and is logged to their timeline, so the full conversation stays in one place.

## Message length and cost

Standard messages are billed in 160-character segments. If your message includes emoji or non-Latin characters, that limit drops to 70 characters per segment. The character counter in the chat window updates live and switches thresholds automatically when it detects these characters, so you always know how many segments a message will use before you send it.

## Personalization

You can insert contact and company properties directly into your message using the token picker in the chat window -- these are filled in automatically with the contact's real data at send time.
